In recreational curling, there’s no doubt that learning to deliver a rock is critical. However, there’s another skill that’s just as vital to a team’s success but often overlooked: sweeping.

As a skip, I can’t stress enough how important proper sweeping is to the outcome of every shot. Whether it’s controlling the distance a stone travels, adjusting its trajectory, or communicating the rock’s speed to the player calling the line, sweepers play a pivotal role in a team’s shot-making ability.

Clubs could greatly benefit from hosting sweeping clinics alongside their learn-to-curl programs. 

Beginners and club-level curlers should learn:

• Proper Positioning: Learning where to stand relative to the rock and the line of delivery.

• Pressure Application: Understanding how to apply downward force onto the broom to create the necessary friction.

• Timing and Communication: Knowing when to sweep and communicating effectively with the skip and the thrower.

These skills not only enhance the effectiveness of sweeping but also foster a stronger sense of teamwork.
