Sweeping: A Crucial Skill for Club-level Curling

In recreational curling, there’s no doubt that learning to deliver a rock is critical. However, there’s another skill that’s just as vital to a team’s success but often overlooked: sweeping.

As a skip, I can’t stress enough how important proper sweeping is to the outcome of every shot. Whether it’s controlling the distance a stone travels, adjusting its trajectory, or communicating the rock’s speed to the player calling the line, sweepers play a pivotal role in a team’s shot-making ability.

Why Sweeping Matters

Sweeping is more than just an action performed on the ice; it’s a science and an art. Effective sweeping can make a shot travel farther, stay straighter, or even curl more than initially expected. On the other hand, ineffective sweeping—often jokingly referred to as “feather dusting”—does little to help the rock achieve its intended goal.

For skips, it can be disheartening to see a perfectly called shot fall short or miss its mark when effective sweeping could have made the difference. Recreational curlers often underestimate just how much influence sweeping has on the game—and this is where more emphasis is needed during learn-to-curl programs.

Learning the Art of Sweeping

In many beginner programs, the focus often leans heavily on rock delivery, which is undeniably essential. However, an equal amount of attention should be given to teaching and emphasizing the importance of effective sweeping techniques to new players. Clubs could greatly benefit from hosting sweeping clinics alongside their learn-to-curl programs.

Beginners and club-level curlers should learn:

  • Proper Positioning: Learning where to stand relative to the rock and the line of delivery.

  • Pressure Application: Understanding how to apply downward force onto the broom to create the necessary friction.

  • Timing and Communication: Knowing when to sweep and communicating effectively with the skip and the thrower.

These skills not only enhance the effectiveness of sweeping but also foster a stronger sense of teamwork.

Final Thoughts

As a skip, I’ve seen firsthand how proper sweeping can turn a challenging shot into a winning one. Sweeping is not just a secondary skill—it’s an integral part of curling that deserves more attention in learn-to-curl programs and recreational play. By dedicating time to improving sweeping techniques, we can elevate the level of play, improve teamwork, and make the game even more enjoyable for everyone.

So the next time you hit the ice, remember: sweeping is more than just brushing—it’s a game-changer!
